About Us

Bumps Ski & Surf was established in March 1982 and over the past forty years has proved to be a stayer in the ski industry.  This has been achieved through pioneering innovative new technology and setting the standard for others to follow.

March 15th 1982 may seem a long time ago for most of us, however it was on that day Peter and Glenda Haley opened the doors on Bumps Ski and Sport (now called Bumps Ski and Surf), at 465 Glenhuntly Rd Elsternwick. Their goal was to develop and maintain a growing ski and sport retail business by providing the highest possible level of customer service in the industry – which undoubtedly has been achieved. Our motto “the right product for the right reason, no exceptions” still rings true, with their highly trained staff always advising what is best for the individual.

Peter & Glenda’s dedication to customer needs, continual product renewal and innovation has shone through everything they have done. For this they have been rewarded with a continually expanding customer base. This has been best epitomised by the regular and necessary expansion of the shop floor. By 1987 the original, overcrowded premises were expanded to include number 467 Glen Huntly Rd, which doubled the floor space. The year 2000 saw the implementation of GST, skiing before Queen’s birthday weekend and a further business expansion, which necessitated taking over a fourth shop - number 461.  Due to the huge success of the snow and surf area of the business, it was decided to change the name to Bumps Ski & Surf and focus primarily on these areas. This trend in growth has continued; 5 years ago the shop was moved to a custom designed space at 481 Glenhuntly Rd, Elsternwick – where it now stands.

Bumps’ were pioneers within the ski industry introducing many ideas that have been adopted across the board such as Boot Fit Guarantee and extended winter trading hours (to allow for easier ski rental). It has also led to many new ideas such as the Annual Kids’ Recycle Sale and the Annual Race Exhibition – both of which are widely attended.  This year Bumps Celebrates the 21st Anniversary of the Kids Recycle sale.

To deliver the best possible service Bumps runs lots of staff training. Bump constantly has new boot fitters being trained, even including bootfitter doing stints overseas to work in and learn from some of the best boot fitting stores in the world. Due to this dedication to boot fitting Bumps was the first Australian store included on the ‘American’s best Bootfitters’ website.

In 1997 Bumps website was first release taking Bumps onto the National scene.  Bumps policy of continual modernisations has led to the same level of innovation seen in their industry leading shop policies. Bumps was one of the first to introduce the exclusive Wintersteiger factory finish ski and snowboard tuning service to metropolitan Melbourne and the first in the world to take delivery of the Montana Infrared Race Waxer machine.

Bumps dedication to their customers’ needs, innovation and quality customer service has allowed for a high level of growth over the last thirty-five years - a trend that will hopefully continue into the future. At Bumps you will always get the right product, for the right person, as it is the customer that is most important. Bumps a family owned and family run business will always be there for families and individuals to get the best possible service, products and experience. Showing Glenda and Peter’s passion and dedication to the industry, Bumps is the only Snowsports store in Melbourne still run by the stores original owners.
